Nevsky Prospect is the main street in the city of Saint Petersburg in Russia. It takes its name from the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the monastery which stands at the eastern end of the street, and which in turn commemorates the Russian hero knyaz Alexander Nevsky. Major sights include the Stroganov Palace, the huge Kazan Cathedral, the Singer Bookhouse, Elisseeff Emporium, a monument to Catherine the Great, the Great Gostiny Dvor, the Russian National Library, the Anichkov Bridge with its horse statues, and the Singer House. The Nevsky today functions as the main thoroughfare in Saint Petersburg. The majority of the city’s shopping and nightlife takes place on Nevsky Prospect.
